I’m a total sucker for novelty, anything analog, or anything a bit nostalgic. I love Polaroids, tchotchkes, gift shops, typewriters, pinball, you name it. I love anything that’s a little out of the ordinary, and especially anything miniature or handmade. So when my friend Carly gifted me the sweetest little jam print and told me there was a series of vending machines that dispense miniature art, my car keys were in hand immediately.
Anastasia Inciardi is an East Coast printmaker who, inspired by old-school coin-operated stickers and temp tattoo machines, created “The Mini Print Vending Machine.” For one dollar, you instantly receive your own 2x3” piece of art.
What I didn’t anticipate when I loaded up on quarters was that I would discover a whole new artistic medium to dive into. I came for the novelty, but stayed for the printing style. I immediately became fascinated by these little prints. How were they made? What tools get used? I could feel the new obsession rising in me with each new one I pulled from the machine. Looking at the little lines sparked a new curiosity in me.
I came home and began a plunge into the world of linocut, discovering so many talented printmakers, and my infatuation with the process began to grow.
Read on to learn about my new linocut obsession and some fabulous artists and resources to check out!
